GitHub's MCP registry
github.com/mcp is GitHub's curated catalog of MCP servers. Each entry has an install button that adds the server to VS Code / GitHub Copilot. It is a smaller, curated list rather than an open index.
Looking for the GitHub MCP server (the server that lets an agent work with GitHub repositories, issues and pull requests)? That's a different thing — see the GitHub MCP server listing.
GitHub's registry vs the official MCP registry
| GitHub MCP registry | Official MCP registry | |
|---|---|---|
| Run by | GitHub | MCP project (open source) |
| Scope | Curated selection | Open: anyone with a verified namespace can publish |
| Install | One-click into VS Code / Copilot | Metadata only; clients and directories build on it |
| API | — | Public REST API (v0.1) |
How to get listed
Publish your server to the official MCP registry first — it is the common source that GitHub's list, MCP clients and directories like MCPSkillHub read from. A clear README, a published package and a stable release make inclusion in curated lists more likely.
