Session Handoff skill
session-handoffsoftaworks/agent-toolkitskills/session-handoff/SKILL.md
Creates comprehensive handoff documents for seamless AI agent session transfers. Triggered when: (1) user requests handoff/memory/context save, (2) context window approaches capacity, (3) major task milestone completed, (4) work session ending, (5) user says 'save state', 'create handoff', 'I need to pause', 'context is getting full', (6) resuming work with 'load handoff', 'resume from', 'continue where we left off'. Proactively suggests handoffs after substantial work (multiple file edits, complex debugging, architecture decisions). Solves long-running agent context exhaustion by enabling fresh agents to continue with zero ambiguity.

Install the Session Handoff skill
Skills CLI (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and others)
npx skills add https://github.com/softaworks/agent-toolkit --skill session-handoff
Claude Code, by hand (all projects)
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/softaworks/agent-toolkit.git /tmp/agent-toolkit mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills cp -R /tmp/agent-toolkit/skills/session-handoff ~/.claude/skills/session-handoff
For one project only, copy the folder into .claude/skills/ in that project instead. The agent picks it up when a task matches its description.
What it costs your context
Agent Skills load in three steps. Tokens counted with the o200k tokenizer; your model's count will differ a little.
| When | What loads | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Every session | Name and description | 140 tok |
| When the agent uses it | The SKILL.md instructions | 1,322 tok |
| Only if opened | 11 bundled files (74 KB) | varies |
Until it is used, session-handoff costs about 9.7× less than the median MCP server we measured (1,363 tokens on every turn). Installing all 43 skills from softaworks/agent-toolkit would load 2,462 tokens of descriptions. Skills vs MCP study
